Recreation Department
The City of Gustine offers the community the following recreation offerings:
Softball – There is an adult men's league featured during the baseball season from May through August. There is a separate adult Co-ed league from August through January. The season culminates in playoffs which lead to a season championship team in both leagues. Teams interested in participating in league play should watch for announcements regarding sign-up procedures in the Gustine Press Standard as well as on this website.
Basketball – The City sponsors an “open gym” for adult (age 18 and above) basketball play during evening hours from 7pm to 8:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays year round. The “open gym” for age 17 and below is on Sundays from 5pm to 7pm. While teams are not organized, pick-up games are normally held when the gym is open. Open gym normally takes place at Gustine Middle School. Contact the City for fees, hours and further details.
Fishing Derby – A fishing derby for children age 16 years and under is sponsored by the City. The event is held during the summer and is normally announced the week prior to the event. The derby is held in the lake at Schmidt Park.
Aquatics Program – A comprehensive aquatics program is held during the summer months. We offer residents a chance to participate in a variety of aquatics activities including swim lessons for all ability levels, water aerobics classes, special programs for toddlers and babies, lap swimming and regular recreation swimming opportunities. Signups will be announced in the Gustine Press Standard as well as on this website. Click here for program.
Park Rental – Gustine has two major parks with areas that are available for rental. Facility rental details are provided elsewhere on this website.
Y-Lead – The City also has a very popular community service program wherein Gustine youth may gain vital leadership skills. Y-Lead is geared towards students entering fourth through seventh grades. In addition to these participants, called Y-Leaders, the City employs Captains who are high school aged students to organize fun and educational games, activities and field trips. The City is also in the process of developing the interim position of Junior Captain to serve as a training position towards Captain. The Y-Lead Program operates from 8am to noon on weekdays for seven weeks from June through August. Enrollment begins in May of each year. Signups will be announced in the Gustine Press Standard as well as on this website.
