St. Louis Encephalitis and West Nile Virus Notice

The Merced County Mosquito Abatement District received confirmation that one of their sentinel chickens in Merced County have tested positive for St. Louis Encephalitis Virus (SLEV).
The Merced County Mosquito Abatement District received confirmation that one of their sentinel chickens in Merced County have tested positive for St. Louis Encephalitis Virus (SLEV). SLEV is related to West Nile Virus (WNV) and is transmitted via the bite of Culex mosquitoes, the same mosquitoes that transmit WNV. 

Please see the attached notice from the Merced County Mosquito Abatement District for more information. 

Please take the following precautions to limit your contact with mosquitoes:
- Drain standing water.
- Defend yourself against mosquitoes by using repellents containing DEET, Picardin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. 
- Avoid being outdoors during dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most present.
